Montevideo is the capital city of Uruguay, located on the east bank of the Rio de la Plata. Though sometimes overlooked beside nearby Buenos Aires, Montevideo is a significant city in its own right: it's the cultural and political center of the country, home to well over a million people, more than ten times the size of the next largest Uruguayan city. The metro area has around two million—half of the population of Uruguay—but the friendliness and helpfulness of the residents will make you think you're in a much smaller city.

Here are some of the top beaches in Montevideo Playa Pocitos: Located in the upscale neighborhood of Pocitos, Playa Pocitos is one of the most popular and iconic beaches in Montevideo. It features a wide sandy shoreline, calm waters, and a vibrant atmosphere. The beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and beach sports. It is also lined with cafes, restaurants, and bars, making it a great spot to enjoy a drink or meal with a view.
Ramírez Beach: Situated in the residential neighborhood of Ramirez, this beach offers a more tranquil and relaxed atmosphere. It is known for its long stretch of golden sand, shallow waters, and family-friendly environment.

Punta del Este is located in Maldonado Department, adjacent to the departmental capital of Maldonado, on the Atlantic Coast in the south of the country. The city had a population of 9,300 people in 2011.

Rivera is a city in the northern interior of Uruguay. It's the capital of Rivera Department, located on the border with Brazil, right across from the Brazilian city of Santana do Livramento. Full of large hills and cheap shopping, Rivera's main attraction is its location on the border. Uruguayans come for the inexpensive goods on the Brazilian side, and Brazilians come for the duty-free shops on the Uruguayan side. Travellers from other countries can take advantage of both. Rivera also gives you the chance to stand with a foot in each country—a cool photo opportunity.
