Thank you for a great year: Let's revisit some of our big moments
2024 was a huge year for us, and we're very grateful to all of our users who made all of this possible. This year we hired our first employee, shipped the most feature updates we've ever shipped, and significantly expanded our free offering, Starting November 1st, there have been no pin limits for new users. And in January, we'll remove all limits for existing users!
Here's a quick look on what we've achieved in 2024, and our plans for 2025.
Trips
This year we released two big updates to trips: map visualizations showing the path you took, and a new UI for everything, along with trip friends & photos. We also had a couple minor updates that brought transit days, additional travel types, and input improvements. These were all user suggestions, so please reach out on Instagram or via email and keep the suggestions coming!
Trips are one of the most important features in our mind, and we'll hopefully see a lot of new features here in the coming year like trip places, more granular trip sharing, more visualizations (maybe outputs for Instagram stories), etc.
Photo Scanner
This was maybe the most asked-for feature we've ever had, and this year we finally built it! New and old users alike can now import all their pins from their Apple Photos Library
A New Home Page
We added a colored-in map of the world at the very top of your homepage this year. This is perhaps the one update that you can't miss! I really think it gives the home page a personal touch that we were missing. We know there are a lot of optimizations to be done in this page, and you'll hopefully see more of that in the coming year.
We also added state flags here! So tap on a country like the United States, and you'll see a map of the states you've visited, along with their flags
Places
Places got a facelift this year. Your favorite cafes, restaurants, museums, and more now have their unique categories and icons. We designed more than 50 unique icons for this project (each with 10 color variations), but the difference is huge (at least in our mind)
Discover
We re-did our discover page this year, with much richer content that now features our "top places" and relevant posts from our blog. All of this information is hand-curated, and we'd love to hear your recommendations. So please reach out!
Discover is another area we want to improve, so would love to hear your thoughts on what we can offer here.
Map Settings & Free Map Styles
We now have a dedicated map settings page that you can use to customize the look and feel of your map. We also made all of our map styles completely free. (we're on a push to give away as much functionality as we can, without incurring too many losses!) We also launched our first new custom pin-pack for valentine's day this year, with more coming soon.
And Much More
We've made countless small improvements this year, and added small features here and there that don't necessarily warrant their own topic. So here are a few that I especially like:
First Employee: We have our very own in-house designer, which is super exciting!
Android: our android app has lagged significantly behind iOS, we're catching up this year!
City Friends: When you click on "discover" for one of your pins, you'll see which one of your friends have been there
New QR Scanner: We had a lot of bug reports that scanning friends' QR codes via the camera app didn't always work, so we built our own
Pin & Place Pin Sizes: You can now independently change the icon size for different pin types
Photos: We completely revamped our photos architecture to support a lot of upcoming features. You hopefully haven't noticed anything change, but this is massive for us!
Empty Behaviors: We added quite a few guiding notes, icons, etc. on pages without any data
Photo Thumbnails: We now load thumbnails of photos instead of the full-size photos when viewing them in a grid. This saves you a lot of time (and mobile data!)
Country Stats: There's now a lot of stats in your list tab and home page (when you click on a flag)
Yearly Stats: The timeline now has a count of how many trips/days you were away on each year
And that's a wrap! Thank you so much for being part of our journey in 2024, and we are really looking forward to everything that we'll achieve in 2025! 💪
